The reason for requiring donations for class registrations is not for money. It is to ensure attendance after registration.
The dropout rate for Theravāda classes is extremely high. Main reason is because most, if not all, Theravāda classes are free and people lack commitment when they do not have to pay for the classes. They do not understand the amount of time, effort and money involved in organising an event or a class. So, many people register then fail to turn up or just come for a few lessons then drop out. This not only wastes a Theravāda Buddhist organisation’s resources, it also deprives other Buddhists who are really interested in the event/class to miss out on the opportunity to join, especially retreats.
This idea came from Singapore Buddhist Welfare Services. Initially, SBWS, gives Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) consultation and medicine for free. However, they found that many patients did not eat the prescribed medicine and just threw them away. They then decided to charge the patients $1 for 1 day of medicine. Although the fee is minimal, it drastically reduced the amount of wastage by the patients.
Therefore, RID is also using this method to try to reduce no-shows and lack of commitment.
Anyone who misses class for 2 consecutive sessions or misses a total of 3 classes, even in non-consecutive sessions, will be removed from the name list and the slot will be opened for others to join, unless there is a valid reason like going for holiday or illness and the teacher is informed beforehand. If the removed person wants to join again with a stronger conviction, donate & register again.
If you miss a session, recordings will be available for review. Active participation in discussions and activities is expected and will contribute to the overall learning experience.
